70’s Built Lake Home Remodel
Perched atop a picturesque critical dune near Frankfort, MI, is a unique gem of a home that marries the charm of the 70s with contemporary conveniences. This lake home, boasting breathtaking views of Lake Michigan, has undergone a remarkable transformation.
Originally inspired by a ship’s interior and built in the 70s, the home was given a much-needed refresh while preserving its character. As detailed in the Spring 2018 issue of Michigan Home and Lifestyle magazine, Lakeshore Custom Homes ensured that each added element looked like it was part of the home all along.
The team at Lakeshore Custom Homes meticulously planned and executed the renovation and expansion of this beloved property. Emphasizing the homeowners’ desires for a more comfortable and spacious dwelling, the original 2,728 square-foot home with four bedrooms and three bathrooms evolved into a generous 4,387 square-foot haven of comfort and style.
The remodel’s thoughtful design carefully respected the environmentally sensitive location of the home. Navigating around the critical dune was challenging, but the Lakeshore team adhered to strict government regulations to protect Michigan’s unique ecosystem while realizing their vision.
The makeover involved an extensive overhaul. The old garage was demolished and replaced with a larger structure seamlessly connecting to the existing home. The new section hosts an upgraded master suite and bunkroom, a kitchenette, additional dining and living space, and a two-car garage. The use of radiant floor heating and extra insulation guarantees a cozy atmosphere throughout.
Inside the main house, walls were removed to create an open-concept kitchen, dining, and living area. Features such as a custom hood vent, quartz countertops, white oak doors, a built-in butler’s pantry, and a top-of-the-line Thermador range lend a luxurious touch to the home’s heart.
One standout feature is the existing stone fireplace. With the removed walls, it gained a new lease on life with a dual-purpose design – one side burning wood and the other a gas fireplace. This change made the fireplace an impressive focal point.
A major exterior upgrade included the addition of tongue and groove cedar siding and custom-made white oak entrance doors. The decking used Ironwood, adding to the home’s aesthetic appeal. Large glass windows offer panoramic hilltop views of Lake Michigan, flooding the home with natural light.
Lakeshore Custom Homes’ commitment to maintaining the property’s original charm while introducing modern amenities was a guiding principle in our renovation approach, ultimately leading to the harmonious integration of the old and new portions of the house. The result is a stunning, rejuvenated Lake Michigan home where the past meets the present in perfect harmony, providing an unmatched lakeside living experience.
